Food in Focus: Oregano

Oregano, it’s that unmistakable taste and aroma of Italian dishes.

The antioxidants found in oregano give the herb its flavour and scent, as well as contributing to its health benefits.

Belonging to the mint family, oregano has been cultivated for centuries and was used by the ancient Greek and Roman Empires to treat sores, aching muscles and as an antiseptic. It’s also been used in herbal medicine for cramping, indigestion and colds.

More research needs to be done to confirm the health benefits of oregano, but there is some evidence that when included as part of a healthy, balanced diet, its phytonutrients could help fight bacteria.

Specifically, oregano contains carvacrol and thymol, two potent antioxidants, that are thought to benefit our cardiovascular and nervous systems and may aid in reducing inflammation. These two antioxidants have been found to have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties that can help to fight diseases brought about by bacteria.
